The Challenge

A global leader in the food industry with a rapidly expanding plant in southwest Ontario required redundancy for their production and boiler reverse osmosis (RO) systems. This plant faced some of the most challenging feed water conditions in Ontario with extremely high levels of TDS & hardness. The customer had been plagued by unplanned downtime due to an aging RO system, hence the requirement for redundant equipment in the future.

Lastly, the customer experienced difficulties with their existing RO service provider during these unplanned system outages (and even for regular, scheduled service). As a result, one of the key selection criteria for a new system was purchasing equipment from a true service partner for the maintenance and support of their future boiler feed RO systems.

Our Solution

HPWS designed a redundant RO system for both production and boiler-feed with best-in-class RO equipment from Suez Water. HPWS completed this installation during peak production season without disrupting any on-going operations. Pretreatment for the RO equipment includes both chemical feed (antiscalent injection to prevent membrane element fouling due to the high hardness) and back-washable carbon filters.

With both of the new RO units covered under a preventative maintenance agreement with HPWS, the customer is now confident that their equipment will perform consistently without any unplanned downtime. They also have a long-term service partner with HPWS servicing the equipment and providing technical assistance as required.
