The Challenge
The High Purity Water Services (HPWS) Western Canada sales and service team was contacted by a large lab testing facility in Calgary that was concerned about a) their existing pure water service provider’s responsiveness and capabilities and b) a newly installed lab water system. HPWS swiftly arranged a site visit and quickly identified a few critical issues. The lab had commissioned the installation of an Elga Centra R200 to provide them with Type II pure water that met the needs of the lab team’s critical testing procedures. However, upon inspection by the HPWS team, not only had the equipment been improperly installed, but it was also producing nothing: no water at all. This was due to the main water loop feeding the lab, which was completely full of bacteria and preventing sufficient flow from feeding the new equipment. This had not been accounted for in the original scope provided by the previous provider and equipment installer. The HPWS team was stunned that the existing service provider and equipment installer would have left any customer’s equipment in such condition.
The HPWS team was tasked with cleaning this loop before completing a full and proper re-installation of the Elga Centra R200 that was already on site.
Our Solution
The HPWS team decided that before the re-installation could begin a complete and heavy disinfect of the main distribution loop had to be done to clear away all bacteria that could contaminate the lab water feed. HPWS brough in a CIP (clean in place) system to undertake this vital task. This disinfection process was left running overnight to ensure all bacteria was removed. Next, HPWS completed the re-model and re-installation of the Elga Centra R200. HPWS had to completely redesign this installation adding in filters, tanks, boards (to improve serviceability), and sample ports. This ensured that the system could operate to its full potential while making future service more straightforward and accessible.
Once the previous system issues were fixed and the Elga unit was brought up to HPWS standards, the equipment was switched on and fully commissioned. All bacteria were successfully removed. The lab team now has unlimited access to the pure water that allows their team to provide critical service for the Calgary area. The customer was so confident in HPWS’s abilities that HPWS was awarded the service contract on the system as well. This shows that not only did the HPWS team meet expectations, they totally exceeded them.
